Electronic Wizard Speeds Calculation
NEW YORK, March 25. (AP)—An electronic mathematical wizard with a "built-in memory" was described today to the Institute of Radio Engineers.
Experts from the Eckert-Mauchley Computer corporation of Philadelphia described the new electronic computer as more than 10 times as fast as former methods.
Isaac L. Auerbach, one of the developers of the device, said the electronic brain of the computer will store a thousand numbers in a pint of mercury. Five million pulse signals a second can be sent into the "mercury memory." (Spokane Chronicle, 25 Mar 1948, Thu · Page 2)

NEW YORK (AP)—An information searching machine to answer questions by scanning 1000 records per minute has been developed by the International Business Machines Corporation.
This super-gadget combines the electronic principles of the "mechanical brain" business machine with a mechanical "language" of 792 characters.
Photoelectric eyes read scientific information from punched cards.
Information contained in books and technical literature is condensed in machine language on cards. When a question card is placed in the machine, the answer or index to where the answer can be found is automatically given.
